 Whitehaven's Maritime Past

17th July to 18th September

Whitehaven, one of the most important ports in the country during the 17th and 18th centuries, has a rich maritime past and this exhibition will celebrate this heritage. The exhibition brings together not only some previously unseen paintings from the Beacon collection, but also some from other collections in Britain. Alongside paintings from its own collection, works from both Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery are also on display.

The Beacon’s curator, Charlotte Stead says ‘We are very excited to be able to bring together these beautiful paintings and celebrate Whitehaven’s rich maritime heritage.’

As well as magnificent paintings, this exhibition will also show items from the Beacon’s ship model collection such as the Henry Lowther, recently returned to The Beacon’s Museum Collection after almost 20 years of careful conservation work. The Henry Lowther was officially “relaunched” into the museum collection on Saturday 20th March by Cllr Mike McVeigh, who is now Mayor of Copeland, alongside Cllr Hugh Branney.

The exhibition begins on 17th July and is showing until 18th September in The Harbour Gallery. It is open Tuesday to Sunday and holiday Mondays 10am to 4.30pm.  Entry is FREE.
